Activity 1
With a family member, plan a visit the local farmer’s market. Go to www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org/ and click on the farmer’s market that you plan on going to. Take a look at the list of items are currently being sold at the market. Then, plan a meal using the items that you intend on buying there.

Check out these websites for recipes using seasonal crops:

Go to the market and purchase the items. Choose at least one item that you have never tried or have never heard of before. Prepare a meal using all the items you bought.

Take some notes while you’re there: Talk to the farmers about where they grew the produce and how far it is from the market. Ask them why you should buy from local farms. Ask them how you could learn more about sustainability practices.

Purpose: Going to the farmer’s market can be an amazing learning experience. You can meet the people who actually grew and picked your food! They are as much part of your community as any other person. Through the interview, you can also learn about how buying from our local vendors is actually beneficial to everyone. Lastly, by cooking your meal you will see that it is possible to make a meal with just the crops that grow naturally during that seasons, instead of having to always rely on crops that are grown 5000 miles away.

On March xx, 2013, submit
  • A picture of the meal you made
  • Copy of the recipe
  • Copy of your interview with a farmer/vendor
  • A one page reflection about what you learned from this experience

Generalization Learning Target:
  • Students will understand that the food we eat is reflective of what is available in the region where we live.
  • Students will understand that the actions we take today will affect the health and future existence of our community.

Activity 2
With a family member, go to the public library and find three picture books about soups that represent different cultural backgrounds.

After reading the books, make a list of similarities of the soups. Using the following questions as a guide:
  1. What kind of broth did each of the soups have?
  2. Was the broth thick? Or thin?
  3. Was there any meat used?
  4. What vegetables were used?
  5. Where there noodles? What kind of noodles? Thick? Thin? Rice? Buckwheat?
  6. Did the soup have rice?

Purpose: To share with a family member what you learned about the similarities of soups between cultures.

On March xx, 2013, submit:
  • A list of books you read with a summary explaining what the book was about and culture the soup represented.
  • The list you created of the similarities of the soups

Generalization Learning Target:
  • Students will understand that people from different cultural backgrounds live in Washington, but that we are connected through the universality of the eating of soup.

Activity 3
With a family member, pick three food items in your pantry that have labels on them. For each item, make a list of characteristics noting the:
  • Size
  • Colors
  • Font
  • Words
  • Pictures
  • Location
  • Any special features

Based on what we learned in class about creating advertisements that will appeal to your customers, make inferences about why the company made those decisions about how the label was created.

For each product, describe who you think the intended audience is. Then for each characteristic, write a reason why you think the company decided to make it that way, keeping the audience/customer in mind.
Purpose: To share with a family member what you learned about how companies use what they know about their customers to make certain advertising strategies.

On March xx, 2013, submit:
  • The name of the products you chose to analyze
  • The characteristics of the labels for each product
  • Who you think the intended audience is for each product
  • The inferences for each of the characteristics you analyzed

Skill Learning Target:
  • Students will be able to find information about their target market and use it to inform their advertising strategy.
